One of the side benefits of being a minister and a spiritual counselor is that I’ve talked with at least 1,000 people about their ways of self-sabotage and so I’ve learned a lot about the topic. Now, I can see the sabotage coming and so I don’t engage.
I used to feel as though my own self-sabotage was like some kind of monster from the deep that would grab a hold on my leg and pull me right down, under the surface so that I felt like I was drowning and there was nothing I could do.
I really hated that feeling of being pulled down, down, down by the ego. It felt so strong, I didn’t have the strength to resist. It felt easier to just let it drag me down and then try to make a come back later.
Now, I know that we can interrupt the patterns that drag us down. These fear patterns SEEM like they have so much power, but they really don’t. God has ALL the power and there is NO other power anywhere, ever, at any time.
A Course in Miracles tells us that we’re much too tolerant of mind-wandering. Our mind wanders to thoughts of separation, which frighten us, and we stay there, adding more and more to the story like adding to a house of cards until we collapse into some really blatant form of self-attack, like drinking an entire bottle of wine or some other self-wounding which leaves us feeling like a total loser.
And, of course, that’s frightening to us.
It’s also more evidence to the ego that we’re an idiot and cannot be trusted at all.
Fortunately, none of this really means anything. Only Love is meaningful. In that same section of ACIM that I just referred to, Jesus says to us:
“The correction is always the same. Before you choose to do anything, ask me if your choice is in accord with mine. If you are sure that it is, there will be no fear.” T-2.VI.4.
If we’d truly like to make sure our choices are in accord with Jesus, we can ask him to remind us to ask him. We can ask the angels to remind us too. All of heaven will absolutely support us if we’re willing to receive it.
Sometimes it seems to me that the most fundamental form of sabotage is convincing ourselves that we’re on our own when we never are and cannot be. It’s completely an illusion.
Let’s join together and decide that we will not be party to this insanity anymore! Enough!
Today, let’s have the courage to realize there is no monster under the bed, there is only the idea of one. It’s a shadow. We are the Light!
We’re an expanding global spiritual community of prayerful people willing to be co-workers with God. We’re waking up together and finding freedom in our hearts. I’m so grateful for this!
