Do you ever use “I don’t feel like it” as a cop-out and then feel bad about it later? I used to do that. It feels like a spiritual immaturity to me now. There’s a fine line between being a really good steward of one’s energy and being a bully or a slacker.
My grandfather, Walter T. Hadley was in sales and he had all kinds of sayings. One of them was “There are 3 kinds of people: workers, shirkers and jerkers.” It’s true for the most part. Of course I always knew when he said that there was only one of the three three kinds of people that he respected – the workers. My grandfather was a worker, but he didn’t enjoy work more than his family. He seemed to live a balanced life. He had his work in perspective and he was an excellent provider. He was a self-made man with a sixth grade education. I’ve always admired him and felt very
blessed to have his example to inspire me.
As a spiritual student, it’s very easy to lose perspective on things. We must always remember that the most important thing is Love. For me, that includes being devoted to being awake to what’s happening in this moment and choosing wisely. Being tuned in and tapped in to the choices that life is always streaming, I notice my resistance to certain things. It’s my responsibility as a spiritually mature person to examine the resistance. I need to ask myself what’s really going on when “I don’t feel like it.”
There are many days when I don’t feel like sitting at the computer and sorting through hundreds of emails and doing all the tasks that I’ve set for myself that day. I allow myself to feel what I feel and then I look for the highest choice.
I do not drive myself with thinking I “should” do anything. I pay attention to what I’d like to do and why. If I feel the ego driving my choices I stop. I don’t go that way because I know that no good can come from it. However, I also know it’s important to keep my agreements. Sometimes I have to realign and re-examine the motivation for something.
Being in the habit of seeing every bit of my day as part of my spiritual practice, and dedicating the merit of my practice to the liberation of all beings, I find that I am clear about my choices and I feel good about them most of the time. I am familiar with what clearly choosing Love feels like. It’s a flow. I stay in the flow of Love.
I AM in the flow of Divine Love & Wisdom.
