One of the challenging things that most of us have experienced at some point or another is the thought that we’re wasting time doing whatever it is that we’ve decided to do. The idea of wasting time makes most people feel pretty irritated and upset. Let’s look at this for a moment.

When we think we’ve wasted time – we’re essentially affirming that we haven’t used the time properly and that we’ve made a mistake that leaves us feeling that something has been lost.

Very often that feeling of having wasted time – has many attendant thoughts such as:

I wasted my time =

  • I’m an idiot
  • I’ve made a stupid mistake
  • I’ve lost something valuable
  • I’ve lost something I can never get back
  • I don’t know what I’m doing
  • I’m not masterful
  • I can’t be trusted
  • I’m a victim

and on, and on, and on!

Is there any wonder that we start to feel angry and upset with all of those thoughts and feelings bouncing around?

I intend to be ever more masterful with my word. When I hear myself saying “I’m spending my time” I choose again – I prefer to say – “I’m investing my time, I’m investing my self in ….”

My sense is that we INVEST ourselves in the choices that we make. We’re investing our energy and attention in our choices.

I’ve done work that I didn’t particularly enjoy because I needed to earn a living and that’s what I could do at that time. In that experience I learned to be joyful and grateful to be of service. In that decision to work with that loving attitude, I learned humility.

AND the bonus was that I learned to enjoy what I was doing!

Remember the old adage: Waste not, want not.
Contemplate what that means when you think you’re wasting something.
See if you can choose to invest yourself wisely and be grateful.

Sometimes the very best work in the world is cleaning the toilets for the ones you love!

Affirmation:

I AM investing in a life of Love – well lived! AMEN!

    Thank you Jennifer!
I needed this reminder as I was getting stuck in this thought pattern over the grief of losing my mom to colon cancer. She came to the end of her journey here on earth on Nov.8th. Four days after I arrived in Maine. I was berating myself for not having lived in Maine and been more apart of her life. The truth is even if Ihad lived in Maine I may not have gotten to be in her life as I tho
ink I would. She dealt with a mental illness which often pushed all her children away. She often kept me in her life as I was the one who didnt reside close to her. It’s so interesting as to where the ego can lead us if we listen to it rather than notice the thought and get plugged into Spirit and the truth of who we really are.

Thanks Jennifer! I think that “wasting time” feels like powerlessness and “investing” in something brings the power back. It’s easy to forget that we have the option to choose at all times. That is a gift.

    Beloved Reverend Jennifer,
Thank you so much for this prayer. This is a big one for me. I never realized all the attendant thoughts that go along with this, but those thoughts feel familiar. I’ve been aware for a while that one of my issues is the fear that I will waste the precious time, skills and talents I have been blessed with because I am lost and just don’t know what to do. This thought paralyzes me into ‘no action’which only adds to my self doubt. Thank you for putting words to this for me, it is truly helpful to see this in the light.
Much Love and Blessings to you.
