Infinite Intelligence doesn’t listen to a word I say. Words are mere symbols. How often do I say one thing and mean another? Spirit can only correspond to my thoughts, feelings and desires. Empty words mean nothing. God knows where the rubber meets the road. Spirit knows your heart.
It’s the thoughts, feelings and opinions that I’m devoted to that determine my experience. If I pray to be a place of love and compassion for two minutes in the morning (while in the shower) and then spend the entire day churning over thoughts of resentment and regret, sharing them with everyone I meet along the way, a blind man could see where my devotion lies.
The Divine responds according to the thought I’m devoted to. This is what is meant when we say, “God is no respecter of persons.”
There is no God in the sky who says “I know she’s praying for love and compassion, but she cannot help herself in hating those people who have betrayed her.”
The Divine Presence doesn’t think, “She intends to be loving, but it’s too hard for her, poor thing. Even though she’s always expecting the worst she deserves much better and I’m going to give it to her now so she’ll finally be happy!”
I must be devoted to being the place through which Spirit delivers the love and compassion if I want to see it. If I want to BE abundant and prosperous then I must be devoted to being generous and magnanimous in my thoughts toward others and myself. I must be devoted to praise, understanding and forgiveness. My experience reveals what I’m devoted to. Do I curse the darkness or magnify the light?
True prayer is in my devotion. Only I can demonstrate my devotion. That is my job, my part. The Beloved does all the rest.
