I wonder, is it possible to fight for freedom?

Can we be at war and in a place of love at the same time?
Can we have freedom without love?

When Freedom is realized in me then it is being expressed. Freedom rings IN me.

If I don’t feel free because of something outside of me then it is because something in me doesn’t feel free. To blame the other for imprisoning me cannot bring me freedom. If I’d like to be free from terrorism in the world then I must, as my friend and prayer partner, Rev. Karen Russo, once said, “love the terrorist within me.”

Through my practice of nonviolence, I feel more free because I am less my own tormenter. Through my spiritual practice I put out the darkness within me by allowing more light to shine in my awareness.

I’m so grateful to witness that, because of my spiritual practice, I’m no longer at war with myself. I behave more like a free person and less like a prisoner. Rather than holding onto anger and resentment I let it move through me and this is a realization of freedom. This is my work if I desire to live in a country that is made of people who are truly free. Free in their hearts!

I don’t simply wish to have the freedom buy the large or the extra large size of fries. That’s not enough freedom for me!

I desire to FEEL free to love without resentment, to live without blame or guilt or shame. No military action can give me that. I must, as Dr. King said, shine the light of love that is already within me. I must know that I am already free. We are ALL already free.

Civil rights activist Diane Nash said, “Freedom, by definition, is people realizing that they are their own leaders.”

Today, I take a leadership role in my own life.

I free my mind and discover at least one way I can express myself more fully and more freely. In this way I embody my practice of nonviolence. My daily nonviolent choices set the whole world free and for this I’m so grateful to deepen my practice today!

I AM setting myself Free!
