When I was 30 years old (I’m 56 now) I had the amazing opportunity to go live in my parent’s second home on Deer Isle, off the coast of Maine. I lived there by myself for a few years. I wrote a lot, I waited on tables, I bartended, I started a writer’s group. It was a time of extraordinary healing for me on emotional and mental levels.

Because I wasn’t working a 9 to 5 job, I got to discover what my own rhythms were (of course, they’ve changed since then). I learned that I like to go to bed early and get up early – preferably with the sunrise. I learned that I like to eat a substantial breakfast and lunch and a small dinner. I like to abstain from eating for 12 hours of the day – usually from 7pm to 7am. I like to workout in the morning – or in the later afternoon. I realized that I wake up very alert and my mind starts unplugging the closer I get to bed time.

It’s really life-changing to tune into your own rhythms. If you’re willing to become more aware you can get clarity about when YOU like to eat your meals, and when YOU like to go to bed and wake up. I encourage you to begin to deeply tune into yourself and your own natural rhythms.

If you were on your ideal vacation, and could schedule things your way, what would you do and when? Really contemplate what feels best and natural to you. Ask your Higher Holy Spirit Self to give you direct insights, revelations and clues. Write things down. Keep track of them. You’re worth it. Doing this, you’ll be able to make use of this information in your recalibration to a life of Joy. A life of Joy requires our being awake and alert so we can eliminate the thoughts, beliefs and habits that reinforce a life without Joy. Why repeat the same old same old if it’s not bringing you joy? Because it’s easy?

Begin to really notice when you’re on auto-pilot and have no intention at all. I think it’s SO great that people have been sharing in our facebook group that they forgot they had given up sugar or dairy and just did the same old same old.

Many people, myself included, can fall into a rut of eating the same things again and again simply because it’s easier. I’ve learned to treat myself with more Love and care and it’s definitely improved my life.

At that time I was living on Deer Isle, I went out for a run most days in the early morning and I liked to have a big bowl of pasta for lunch. Afterwards, I’d go into a semi-coma and need a nap. Through that experience I learned that wheat and peanuts are two foods that put me to sleep. They’re both soporifics. I realized there’s a reason why a lot of people feed children peanut butter sandwiches. It’s the ultimate sleep-inducing combo! Wheat induces an insulin release that’s disproportionate to its own lasting power of sugar load and so you get crash effect that you can get from eating sugar, without the real high.

Maybe I was choosing the pasta so that I’d need a nap and could give myself permission to zone out. These are things worth pondering. In every moment, the aware person is tuned into their reason for their choices. Is it an inspired, loving choice, or is it an ego motivation?

These are the kinds of things you can begin to really notice. If you find yourself feeling bloated after a meal, write it down. Make note of what you ate and how you felt. Have you felt that before. Do you know what it is that you ate that left you feeling bloated, or tired, or anxious. Do you frequently keep eating or drinking something that you know doesn’t feel good? Recognize that’s not a loving and kind thing to do to yourself and there are other choices. Being willing to simply have the awareness is so beneficial.

It took me a while, but I’ve learned that while my body can tolerate gluten, it’s SO MUCH happier without it. Plus a lot of gluten is genetically modified – and that’s a whole other story we can deal with later. We’ll be easing off gluten in a few days, so be prepared to increase your energy and sense of well-being.

On the physical cleanse side of our program: Start easing off caffeine. It’s just temporary. You can always go back. I say ease off, because if you’ve been having a lot of caffeine then the sudden withdrawal can cause headaches. I’ve been pretty much caffeine free now for about 6 weeks and I definitely have more energy. I don’t miss it much at all.

I am a coffee lover – obviously! Hey, I named my daily blog, Spiritual Espresso! Here’s how I got off the caffeine: I started by reducing my coffee intake over the course of a few days to one cup and then I switched to black tea for a few days and then I switched to Maté. Maté is a green tea that kind of tastes like new mown grass smells. When I first started drinking it, I spit it out because it was disgusting to me. Now, I love it!!! I’ve been drinking it daily for about 16 years. I add stevia, so it tastes like sweet grass. It has a stimulant that’s not caffeine and is supposed to be really good for you and it’s a green tea.

I don’t drink soda. I was addicted to diet Pepsi when I was younger, but kicked that gnarly habit when I was in my 20’s. Most sodas are either filled with chemicals or sugar. There are sodas made with Stevia – I love stevia root beer – but mostly I avoid the chemicals. Not that chemicals are bad. It’s about noticing what you choose and why you choose it.

Your spiritual practice IS with your feelings and your experience during this time will bring forth lasting healing if you let it. The healing comes from your awakening awareness – from your belief system. If temporarily abstaining from sugar, honey, maple syrup, dairy (not eggs-yet), and soy upsets you, pray on it. Ease these things out of your diet for this period. You don’t have to go cold turkey. If you’ve got stuff in your home you’d like to finish first, do that. The main thing is to be loving with yourself.

Why not soy milk? Apparently soy is an allergic trigger for many people. This 40 days is an experiment – you can always add it back in later. Many things are made with soy these days, so it can take some mindfulness. Soy sauce, fake fish and crab, miso, tempeh, edamame. Soy is hidden in a lot of things. During the 40 days we’re going to eliminate most processed foods so we can feel what it’s like without them. Do we really feel better without them or not?

We’re also facilitating our natural ability to heal and revitalize. A lot of the things that many people eat make it very difficult for the body to do what it was designed to do. We’re loving ourselves by becoming more mindful. Awareness is healing because awareness is loving.
