My main purpose in offering the 40 day reboot of Pray & Clear is to support folks in reclaiming their natural Joy. I’ve definitely learned that we each make choices of how we live, eat and think based on how much we Love ourselves. The more my spiritual practice deepens, the more my mind clears of judgments and opinions the more loving I am with myself.

We’re looking at increasing our Joy through spiritual practice, mindfulness, paying attention to our emotional experiences and restoring our natural serotonin levels through cleansing our digestive system.

Many people don’t really understand what serotonin is or how it works, but it definitely affects every minute of our lives.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, which means it helps transmit signals from one part of the brain to the other. It makes your brain work snappier. Serotonin is manufactured in your digestive system. What you eat and drink and the quality of your digestive tract affects your serotonin production. Your serotonin levels affect your brain function in regard to some of the key things you probably care about such as:

the quality of your sleep
memory and ability to learn
your sexual desire and function of the related body parts
your appetite
your temperature
your moods and behavior
thyroid support

Basically, your serotonin levels are critical to your having an enjoyable physical experience of your life. Doctors believe that low serotonin levels lead to depression, obsessive compulsive behavior, anxiety, panic attacks and excessive anger.

With healthy serotonin life is much more enjoyable.
Without serotonin life is pretty miserable.
What you eat, when you eat and why you eat are key factors in your healing.

It’s kind of obvious to me that having healthy serotonin levels is critically important. And, it’s all related to your digestive system. That’s why we’re moving into a 40 day detox. Alejandro Junger who wrote the book Clean (click here to see at amazon.com) that we’re using as a basis for our detox, is a cardiologist who found himself sick, depressed and overweight. He became motivated to heal himself and even went to India and studied Ayurvedic medicine. He now has an integrative medicine practice in NYC. Junger healed himself, as all healers must do, and in the process he cracked a code on how to restore the body’s natural ability to heal itself and, as I’m calling it, reboot. The key is the digestive system.

If you feel resistant to temporarily abstaining from certain foods and beverages, if you feel bothered by it, frustrated or upset by the thought of doing without, or even if you feel the cravings are too intense, consider this:

Nothing tastes as good as Joy feels.

Now, that can be hard to believe for people who are compulsive overeaters. If you’re self-medicating with food, drugs and alcohol, it can be hard to imagine that changing your diet and restoring your natural serotonin levels could really make that big a difference in your life. And let’s face it, you have no way of knowing until you find out for yourself.

The great thing about discovering anything for yourself is that once you have a realization of the Truth, it doesn’t leave you unless you don’t want it.

Take a look at this photo below – this is me on a Club Med vacation in Martinique sometime around 1983. I was already perfecting my signature “victory is mine!” photo op stance. Back then, I weighed around 135 pounds. I am now exactly 180. Back then I thought I was fat. Now, while I weigh 45 pounds more then I did then, I feel really happy and comfortable with my body. Which just proves to me that happiness and weight are completely unrelated. Back then I was insecure about my body. Now, I look at myself naked in the mirror every day and I see a beautiful woman. No criticism.

Let’s not be deluded that weighing less will make us happy. That’s so crazy!!! If it were true then all the skinny and gorgeous people we know would be the happiest people on earth.

In the process of our 40 days of Pray & Clear we’re not just detoxing physically, because as spiritual students we know, or at least we have heard, that all healing is at the level of the mind.

In truth, it’s not really that what we eat makes us depressed and wheat doesn’t really make us sleepy, but if we haven’t got control of our mind, we’re subject to the beliefs of the human race. If we don’t have dominion over our awareness, we’re like a little boat being tossed upon a big ocean of other people’s beliefs and opinions. When our spiritual connection is strong, other people’s beliefs have less of a hold over us.

This is precisely why a 40 day detox that is designed to operate on all 4 levels (mental, emotional, physical and spiritual) includes having to work with our mind about our attachment to addictive compulsive behavior. We’re working with our mind when it comes to feeling addicted to sugar or caffeine. That’s where the real work is.

Apparently, many people who do the 21 day Clean Program have significant weight loss. And that’s great, but what’s the weight loss for? Is it to satisfy the ego which can NEVER be satisfied? Let’s not go that route. We’ve all been there and done that.

Let’s collectively agree that we’re aspiring to decrease the ego-attachments and the ego-control in our lives. That’s why focusing on Self-Kindness and Self-Love as the way to truly live a joyful life is our goal.

To strengthen your mind, be intentional ALL of the time. At first it seems exhausting, but then you realize it’s liberating because you’re not drifting you’re going where YOU would like to go.

Please notice when you’re you’re drifting and blowing in the wind because you have no intention at all. I’m glad and grateful that people have been sharing in our facebook group about their success, fears and challenges with just the first few days of our Pray & Clear.

On the dietary cleanse side of our program: Begin to pay attention to having more minerals in your food. A lot of things that people eat are grown in soil that is no longer mineral rich. Many people are starved for minerals. My sense is that one of the reasons people who eat a lot of junk food over eat on the junk food is because their food is nutrition poor. Eating more nutritious food naturally satisfies the body.

I like salty food. I use Himalayan Pink Salt because it has 84 different trace minerals and regular table salt has just a few, and it has naturally occurring iodine. I buy unsalted nuts and then add my own Himalayan Pink Salt. I don’t eat many processed foods anymore, but if I do, I look for the ones with sea salt. I get my organic almond butter unsalted and add my own.

While we’re moving into the detox, begin eating more nuts, but do avoid peanuts which are not as good for you and are a soporific. A really healthy snack on the Clean detox is a brown rice cake with almond butter on it. Living in Hawaii, I love macadamias. I put cashews in my smoothie the other day and it was scrumptious. I make my own almond milk.

I’ve been eating A LOT MORE nuts for a few weeks now and I’ve not gained a pound. I’m eating less carbs. I’ve found that two tablespoons or unsalted almond butter with my Himalayan Pink Salt is a snack that really satisfies, especially with a cup of tea. It’s such an easy snack. Same with an avocado with salt – I also love to take a clove of garlic and put it in a garlic press, squeeze the juice of it into an avocado with some salt and that’s a very satisfying snack. YUM!

A friend of mine eats about 8 oz of almond butter a day (that’s 16 tablespoons) and is skinny, but she said she used to be heavy.

Here’s what I had in my smoothie the other day:

Avo-Coco-Cashew Smoothie
12 oz or so of either water or coconut water
3 tablespoons of unsalted cashews
half an avocado
4 oz coconut milk
1 T vanilla
1/2 T hemp seed powder
1 scoop vegan protein powder
2 handfuls of fresh baby spinach
stevia to taste
pinch of Himalayan Pink Salt

My smoothie was totally fresh and delicious and I didn’t get hungry again for many hours. It was so rich and creamy. It was yummy AND good for me. Yes, it had a lot of fat in it, and my body was so content. My mind was focused and alert. It lasted me for a good 6 hours until lunch! I also liked that it was easy to make and easy to clean up! Sweet!
