I am taking a Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training with a beautiful group of teachers led by Hari Kaur Khalsa. It’s been a wonderful journey. I truly appreciate Hari’s beautiful spirit, her stories and wisdom.
I’d like to share a story she recently told that touched me:
There is no shortage of supply; only a shortage of demand.
One cold NYC winter evening I was frustrated and beside myself. I was stuck in a difficult situation and could not find my way out of it. I was between yoga classes and took a break to walk around the corner in the freezing cold. I was muttering, “come on God, let’s get this rolling, I am not asking for much, all I want is a hand, just give me a hand here!”
I was deep in my hooded coat and muttering to myself “give me a hand, all I need is a hand!” over and over. I approached a corner and had to wait for the light. A young man in a dark blue military jacket with a huge fur lined hood bumped into me. I stepped away to keep my distance. He moved closer and he said “This is for you.” I did not hear it completely and said; “I’m fine. Thank you.” He moved closer and bumped me again and said louder; “This is for YOU.” He was trying to hand me a piece of cardboard. I took it.
I turned over this small square of heavy brown cardboard and froze in my place. I looked up and he was gone. I could not believe my eyes. Drawn on this cardboard was a beautifully hand rendered drawing of a HAND, palm up with plenty of room to receive. REALLY?
I had to laugh. I laughed hard. REALLY? Is this how the universe is going to work? I opened my next class – just 10 minutes later with the story. We all laughed but were deeply struck by the strangeness of it all. One dear student, I know well, spoke out; “Hari, don’t you know who you are? Why didn’t you ask for a million dollars?”
That hand drawing hangs on the wall in the Treehouse over the yoga tea table as proof that we are in a conversation with God, with the universe, with life. We are not victims, we are not alone; no matter what. The universe may not give you what you want, but it can point you in the right direction, make you laugh, and clear the path for you to find the way. This feeling of connection and not being alone is the heart of the matter to me and it is nothing short of miraculous.
A Course in Miracles tells us REPEATEDLY to ask, and ask, and ask again. This is a critical part of our undoing the illusion that we’re separate, and on our own.
As we gather insight and release the blocks to Love, we realize that the wisest thing to ask for is assistance, guidance, inspiration, intuition, clear direction and the courage to receive it, rather than for what we imagine is our answered prayer. Releasing the blocks to Love IS our answered prayer.
In Hari’s story, Spirit helps her to remember to laugh. The message of the hand is clear: God is listening very closely. Notice how Hari did what we’ve all done – we push away the prayer’s answer because we have a set idea, an attachment, to how it will come.
There are so many beautiful and profound insights for us in Hari’s simple story. I’ve had similar experiences and they taught me to pray to be a better listener and a better asker.
The angels taught me to ask this question: “If I knew what to ask for, what would I ask for?” Listening to the answer has improved my life tremendously.
People ask me all the all the time: “How do you remember to ask?”
I say, ask the angels to remind you. When we ask for help, it means we’re willing and open to receiving it. Angels love to help us and we can ask all day long. Asking for help with everything and to always see the more loving choice, the more expansive choice is all we need ask for.
It’s extraordinary how simple the most helpful tools can be. Prayer is a power tool. Asking for assistance is different than a prayer.
