Acceptance is the way to Peace of mind – and it’s not for the weak-hearted.
It takes real strength to mentally and emotionally accept the things we don’t like in life.
It can seem that to accept what feels unacceptable would be a loss.
From the ego perspective, it would be a loss, and it would be painful.
Lesson 190 from the workbook of A Course in Miracles tells us “Pain is a wrong perspective.” Why would we find it more acceptable to choose a painful perspective than to accept the truth ?
It’s interesting to look at this and valuable to know the answer.
Consider something you’re looking at in your life that causes you pain when you think about it.
Now, consider that it’s the wrong perspective that is causing our pain.
Are we willing to adopt a God perspective?
Will we continue to think we’re right when it upsets us?
Now, think of something you don’t like, and don’t want in your life. Something you’d dearly like to change and that you label as unacceptable as it is. It makes you mad. It devastates you.
It could be a person’s death.
It could be a politicians policies.
It could be a mis-take you made or something someone did or didn’t do.
For your Freedom – contemplate what is the meaning that you gave it.
If it’s upsetting you, the meaning you’ve given it is false.
Contemplate why you would choose to feel devastated, hurt, angry, upset in anyway.
What is it about that emotional state that you keep choosing?
See what you learn. Then remember this:
I can elect to change all thoughts that hurt.
Loss is not loss when properly perceived. Pain is impossible. There is no grief with any cause at all. And suffering of any kind is nothing but a dream. This is the truth, at first to be but said and then repeated many times; and next to be accepted as but partly true, with many reservations. Then to be considered seriously more and more, and finally accepted as the truth. I can elect to change all thoughts that hurt. And I would go beyond these words today, and past all reservations, and arrive at full acceptance of the truth in them. ACIM Workbook Lesson 284
To be free of pain, our willingness is all that’s required.
Can we hold grievances and still be willing?
I don’t think so. Let’s not delude ourselves anymore.
