I’ve spent the last few days steeping myself in the wisdom of Native American Elders and participating, as I have for many years, in the Native American Elders Gathering at the Sunray Peace Village in Lincoln, Vt. It’s because of my experiences at these gatherings and with my teacher, Venerable Dhyani Ywahoo, that I’ve been coming to Vermont since 2006.
My teacher, Venerable, is both a Cherokee Chief and she’s also a highly esteemed Buddhist teacher recognized by the Dalai Lama and many other Tibetan lamas.
What is being shown to us is the coming together of many streams – New Thought (A Course in Miracles), Buddhism, Native American – and they have many fundamentals in common. One thing that stands out for me is the value of compassion in each of these teachings.
I can remember back in the 80’s when I was in my twenties, I finally caught a real glimpse, a soul glimpse of the value of compassion. It was then that I began to cultivate my ability to practice compassion.
It’s helpful to understand what compassion really is – it’s a loving understanding that we can extend to our brothers and sisters and to ourselves.
Love is what we are.
It is the ground of our being.
And because Love is what we are, when we practice Love, focus on Love and live the Love that we are, we are healed by it. When we extend Love we’re renewing our connection to our true identity and we’re disconnecting from the belief that we are the false identity of the sometimes mean, bitchy, cruel, unkind, uncaring, manipulative, controlling, desperate, depraved, unworthy and just plain bad person that we think we might be. That’s why Love is the healer.
Because Love is the ONLY true healer of EVERYTHING that ails us, when we actively practice compassion we’re both healing ourselves AND we’re healing everyone because our minds are joined together.
We can actively practice compassion anywhere at anytime.
We don’t need special equipment, assistance or permission.
Now, here’s a great benefit that might be a bit hidden –
Most people feel badly for having behaved badly in the past.
We feel badly because we judge ourselves for it and we haven’t forgiven ourselves.
When we extend compassion to our brothers and sisters when they behave badly, we’re forgiving ourselves, because we’re one with them.
When we can have loving understanding for someone who is behaving poorly we’re helping everyone to forgive everything and that’s a huge gift.
Don’t ever underestimate the power of compassion.
Encoded into each expression of loving understanding are multiple healings that ripple throughout the universe.
I aspire to be always compassionate in every moment. I’m not there yet. I’m not even close, but I’m getting closer!
This level of healing and spiritual accomplishment only comes with a dedicated spiritual practice that we use throughout our entire day.
Cultivating that effective spiritual practice is the antidote to EVERY problem in this world.
And the good news is, we can do our part!! There’s no extra charge to be actively compassionate today and every day! If that’s not a blessing, I don’t know what is!
TODAY, you can join me and my friends, Kevin Haddle, Faith Rumer, and more friends on zoom. Kevin is a longtime ACIM student and member of our Masterful Living Community who is profoundly inspired. And Faith is also a member of our Masterful Living community for many years who offers healing through sound with her uplifting music. We’re coming together to share our inspiration in many ways. We’ll have a spiritual celebration together with message and music – we call it Sundays With Spirit. Please invite your family! If you can’t join us, you can catch the replay! Because we’re going to be live on video, you’ll have to register to get the detail . All are welcome, there’s no charge, but you do have to register, unless you’ve already registered in the past.
