A Course in Miracles tells us that forgiveness is our function in this world, and that our entire life is for the purpose of forgiving the past so that we can experience total Freedom, Peace, Harmony, Joy, Prosperity, Wholeness, Creativity, Beauty, Wisdom and everything else our heart desires NOW, without waiting.

So, why do we often choose to hold a grudge, be resentful, and withhold Love to punish the ones we say we Love? Why delay our happiness, healing and Abundance?

Hmmmmm.

For myself, I can honestly say that I didn’t really understand HOW profoundly different my life could be if I practiced forgiveness all day long. I didn’t believe it. I didn’t trust. And I didn’t understand what TRUE forgiveness was.

True forgiveness IS NOT saying “it’s okay.” How could some of the things that happen to us just be okay? It’s pretty hard to imagine.

I just couldn’t get it – until I was willing.

True forgiveness IS releasing our attachment to the meaning we made of things. It’s our interpretations of what happened that cause our suffering.

Think about it: Let’s say something happens that feels upsetting. Once it’s over, it’s over, but the meaning we made of it, our interpretation continues on and on and makes the original upset feel like it’s repeating every time we think about it.

Each and every time we think about it there’s a hidden purpose. Even when it seems like we’re reliving the past over and over, there’s still a hidden purpose and that hidden purpose is … to give us the opportunity to forgive. So, it’s going to keep happening until we finally decide to forgive.

Once I realized that’s why the old memories keep repeating, I decided to start forgiving ASAP so I didn’t have to keep repeating and regurgitating the same unpleasant memories. Enough already! I have MUCH better things to do with my time and energy then be upset about the past again and again.

PLUS, one of the MOST healing things I have EVER learned in my entire life is that to NOT forgive is actually punishing myself. To forgive is to be loving and kind to me. Being loving and kind to myself is what brings more Love into my life – A LOT more Love.

Why? Because when I’m loving to myself, everyone else will treat me with more Love and kindness. I will naturally magnetize and attract people into my life who are more loving and kind to me too. Beautiful! Now, my whole life is changing.

True forgiveness is releasing the judgments and opinions about the past.

That’s the only way to stop recycling the pain of the past – to be willing to release the meaning we made of what happened.

For me it’s been so helpful to use the ACIM teaching of “I don’t know what anything is for.” In truth, I really don’t know what anything is for, but I’d like to. I’d like to know the true meaning of things so that I can learn from them the first time and not repeat them.

When I think I already know what everything is for, then I’m not open to any learning. How can I be open to learning anything if I’ve already decided what everything is for?

When I don’t forgive, when I judge, then I keep repeating the past.

There’s NO WAY OUT of my suffering until I’m willing to release the meaning I made of it.

Forgiveness is my Freedom!

Forgiveness IS my Freedom.

In my past, there were many times when I thought I wanted to forgive, but it felt like I couldn’t. When that was happening it was because I was so attached to the meaning I made of what happened. My interpretation was the only interpretation that I would accept.

I wanted my suffering to end, while still clinging to my interpretation, my judgment, and my opinion, the meaning I made of it. And that meant that, deep down, I wasn’t willing to learn anything.

I didn’t realize it, but that was why I kept repeating the same painful experiences. My Higher Holy Spirit Self was showing me the same opportunity to release my attachment to the meaning I’d made of it, so I could learn the lesson and move on, but I wasn’t willing. I was committed to my judgments.

I had a lot of years suffering over the past and repeating the same experiences of alienating loved ones, decimating relationships, punishing my friends, and generally creating a lot of pain in my life.

Learning to forgive has completely changed my life.

Learning not to judge so that there’s nothing to forgive has improved the quality of every day of the rest of my life.

I decided to forgive everything in my past, EVERYTHING and that is the best decision I ever made. It repaired my relationships, and it set us all FREE.

It does require willingness and trust. You have to drop the attachment to the pain of the past to experience the Joy of Freedom now.
