Stress Relief That Works

Things in the world are going to intensify over the next few weeks. Especially here in the United States. People are very stirred up right now, and for that reason, I’m going to have an open dialogue on Zoom today after our Sundays With Spirit. You can get the details at the very bottom of this email.

One thing we can anticipate is that folks who don’t have a spiritual practice, who are watching the news constantly, are going to be influenced by what feels like fear mongering happening on the screen of our life these days.

Many of the people I speak with are Highly Sensitive People or HSP, and it’s a fact that some people are more sensitive than others. My mother said that to me when I was in my early 20’s. She thought I was far more sensitive than most people and it was a bit of a wake-up call for me. I think she’s right about it. I’m not physically delicate, but I used to be super emotional and very sensitive to what people were feeling around me.

A lot of us highly sensitive people, and highly intuitive people learn as children to tune out our own feelings and other people’s feelings because it’s just too much. Then, when we become spiritual students and realize that we’d like to activate our intuition and find our way back, it can be a challenge. We’ve come to associate our intuition with wounding, fear, and trauma.

I’ve been a spiritual counselor for 20 years, this is SO common for people I meet.

Another challenge we have is that many of us have learned to suffer. We’ve become inured to it. We’ve lost our Self-Love and so we can wallow in a lot of discomfort and not even realize we’re doing it. This is why I make igniting Self-Love a part of my curriculums. We can really change these mind sets and that automatically shifts our behavior.

Right now, it’s especially important that we be prepared for whatever might come so that we can be an anchor in our families and in our communities.

This means that we’re not inflaming our emotional bodies with fear.

People become addicted to being afraid – and the rush that it brings – and they don’t even know it.

We can shift [1] this by being mindful of our thoughts.
We learn to go the other way.

Here are some phrases you can use all throughout your day to shift the focus [2] from negativity:

I’m only subject to what I hold in my mind.
I’m not interested in that anymore.
I don’t know what anything is for.
Everything works together for my good, and I am willing to receive my good.
I AM the Light of the world, and I AM that I AM.

We don’t ever wish to deny our feelings – that’s not helpful. Our emotions are an indicator of our thinking and if we’re not aware of our thinking it’s easy to full down a hole of negativity and false beliefs.

We also wish to be ever so mindful of when we’re stoking the fire of our upsets. We can transform our entire lives by the simple practice of interrupting that fire-stoking thought pattern. I call it getting on the PAIN TRAIN.

We CAN learn to keep from getting on the pain train of negative thoughts – that the gift of mindfulness.

If we allow fearful thoughts to keep us in a constant pattern of fight or flight we’re going to wear out our adrenals and that has a very long range effect that we must do everything we can to avoid.

When there’s a lot of fear, there’s often a lot of anger [3], rage, irritability. According to Ayurvedic Medicine and Chinese Medicine, this affects the liver. Our liver controls a lot of the chemicals and hormones that we experience. When we go into fight or flight, it impacts our liver. One of the reasons people have a lot of physical issues is because their liver is overtaxed.

Worry affects people’s digestion. Worry is when we imagine what we don’t want. And so it’s important to remember “I am only subject to what I hold in mind.” This is why we train ourselves to go the other way.

Stress weakens our hearts and brain. Stress makes it much harder to focus and think.

We cannot just accept stress, worry, fear and anger – we are here to be truly helpful. We are here to represent the one who sent us. We can be a truly helpful example of rising above the battlefield.

Our willingness IS all that’s required.

Myself, I’ve just taken the last two weeks to gently wean myself off of caffeine. As you may know, coffee is what I call my “emotional support animal.” I just love my coffee – but I’m taking a break.

I’m also giving my liver some TLC – I’m doing a liver cleanse (for those who are interested, the Advanced Medical Medium Liver Cleanse). I have been cleansing my liver for the last 18 months because that is my intuitive guidance.

What I can encourage anyone to do is to cut back on caffeine, sugar, alcohol, fats, salt, to help support your liver right now. Eat more leafy greens, sweet potatoes, asparagus, Brussel sprouts, apples, dates. And start and end your day with a big glass of lemon water that you’ve blessed.

I can get caught up in working late at night when I’m living on the east coast, and I’m in Vermont now. So, I’m training myself to get to bed earlier so I can get up earlier – to enjoy more of the quiet time of the day and be still during the time of day when people are going into more anxiety that frequently happens later at a time.

Intuitive Judith Orloff, in her book Emotional Freedom, suggests taking a hot bath if you’re tense and she offers this Progressive Relaxation Technique:
In a comfortable position, sitting or lying down, take a few deep breaths while letting your body go as limp as possible. When you’re ready, begin by tightening the muscles in your toes…hold to a count of ten… then relax. Enjoy the relief of tension melting. Do the same with flexing your foot muscles, and move slowly through your entire body: calves, legs, stomach, back, neck, jaw, face, contracting, and releasing each area.

Conscious breathing is so helpful to us. It gives us a chance to reset, to be mindful and choose again.

All of these practices bring more Peace [5], more Love and more Joy. Isn’t that what we’d prefer?

When we get triggered we can take it as a cue to call forth healing. NOW is the time for us to open to receive all the healing we can! It’s ours for the asking! Most important of all is to remember to Partner UP, to call up on Spirit, Jesus [6], the angels and our ancestors to support us in making the most loving choices that we can.

Our spiritual practice is what allows us to maintain our equilibrium. This, in itself is an offering to all humanity and the earth as well as all the other beings who live here.

When the temptation is to be upset, to be bothered, and we’re so tempted that holding our seat is excruciating, that is the exact moment when we can make a quantum leap in our consciousness. We must learn to look for those moments and make the most of them.

Spiritual practice really does support us in being able to be much more grounded, centered, focused, and responsive rather than reactive.

AND, this is actually helpful. When we get triggered we can take it as a cue to call forth healing. Now’s the time for us to open to receive all the healing we can! It’s ours for the asking!

This is SO worth practicing. Spiritual practice not only saves time, it makes life much more beautiful and precious. No amount of striving in the world can accomplish what we can accomplish through deepening our spiritual practice.

Each choice we make impacts everyone on the planet. Let’s be thought leaders and choose Love.

This is how we actively change the world by changing our mind about the world. Let’s practice Self-Love together today and be truly helpful!
