I started off in the New Thought teachings of Unity in 1986 when I began attending Sunday services with Eric and Olga Butterworth at Lincoln Center. I was living in Manhattan at the time, on West 98th street and Broadway. My friend, Marie, and I would walk down to Lincoln Center together. It could be really cold in the winter, but it was a great way to start the day.
Eric Butterworth was a clear and beautiful teacher of truth. I so appreciate all the many realizations I had while listening to him. I remember he used to say so often, “God can only do for you, what He can do through you.” Eric was a great teacher of Prosperity, but what many folks seemed to miss is that the healing of separation thinking comes through eliminating poverty consciousness.
Poverty consciousness is the belief in lack and limitation.
All thoughts of separation are fundamentally poverty consciousness. It’s the result of being convinced that we are separate from God that leads to our experiences of lack and limitation.
We may say we know that our thought precedes the thing, that our thinking makes things manifest, but we nonetheless continue to try to heal the problem by doing things differently in the world, rather than to have healing at the level of the mind. If we operate that way long enough we conclude that life is not for us and things are against us, but that doesn’t mean it’s true.
One of the things that we work on all year in Masterful Living is becoming aware of the constant stream of lack and limitation thinking. After all, lack in any form is a manifestation of separation beliefs.
I used to really struggle with a sense of lack. I used to feel angry at all the seeming limitations that people wanted to put on me. I had no idea that it was all coming from inside. Like in one of those horror movies where the killer is inside the building, the killer of fun, Joy, Prosperity, Peace, Harmony, and Love, was inside my mind.
I’ve been working to eliminate lack thinking for years and it’s brought me TREMENDOUS benefit.
A common way that we reinforce a sense of separation is to put all the good and rewards in the future. When the good is always in the future, we’re always separate from experiencing it. When our good is a fantasy, then we’re just as far from it.
A Course in Miracles tells us not to seek for Love but to seek within ourselves to find the blocks that we’ve put against Love. Truly, the faster path is to give the block to the Higher Holy Spirit Self for healing every time it is felt. Yes, you may have blocks that are very intense and strong, but that may just mean it will take you to give it to the HHSS 500 times before you are more sincere than insincere. Begin today, don’t delay.
It always seems too simple to say that our willingness is ALL that’s required, but it’s our willfulness to block the Love that put the block in place. Spirit can remove it quickly if we’re truly willing to let it go.
It may seem strange, but one of the best ways to reduce the sense of separation is to make a firm commitment to stop energizing lack and limitation. And to help us do that, be completely willing to recognize all the thoughts of lack and limitation. Start writing them down. Make a list. At the top of the list write:
“These are the things I’m giving to Spirit for healing. I’m done with them. I’m done experiencing them. I am choosing to move on. I am choosing Love instead. Spirit please take these out of my mind so I never think them again:”
Then make your list.
Put them in a notebook.
Take notes in your phone.
Be willing to really make an effort.
Remember, this process costs you nothing. It’s free.
It’s how we bring the darkness to the Light.
Separation thinking, belief in lack – this is a strong motivator that sends us into despair and hopelessness and that is a cause of our self-sabotage and self-medication. Undoing this is what my Challenge to End My Self-Sabotage is all about. You can jump in now – the first day is free – click this link to register and join us TOMORROW, Monday.
Belief in lack and limitation, and feeling like a victim, will drain your life away. They’re extremely debilitating and depressing.
And speaking of depression. ACIM tells us this: “Depression comes from a sense of being deprived of something you want and do not have. Remember that you are deprived of nothing except by your own decisions, and then decide otherwise.”
Again, depression is the RESULT of lack and limitation thinking.
Be willing to contemplate what you feel deprived of and then, be bold and declare that you’re responsible and you’re now done. You’re willing to let the Spirit do all the heavy lifting of removing the thoughts from your mind. Be willing to be done.
If you’re not done with your depression yet, set a date. Tell the Higher Holy Spirit Self that is the day you’ll be done and start to energize it. Count down the days. Make a pact with Spirit. YOU are the decider. No one else can decide for you. You ARE the one you’ve been waiting for.
One other simple tool that’s helped me to shift out of the poverty consciousness is this simple affirmation:
There is no lack in Spirit.
God is all.
God is complete.
Nothing is missing.
Nothing can be added to God and nothing can be taken away.
Lack is a false construct that has no power. I’m over it.
I am choosing Love instead.
Spirit please take these thoughts out of my mind so I never think of them again.
As Eric Butterworth said, “The goal should not be to make money or acquire things, but to achieve the consciousness through which the substance will flow forth when and as you need it.”
We aren’t victims of circumstances and experiences.
We’re the Light of the world and we can shine that Light anytime we choose.
So much healing is available to us if we’re willing to receive it.
