I used to get so annoyed when people didn’t do their best, and give their best, or even just good enough. Many times, people settle for doing a poor job and moving on. It used to let it bother me so much.
After six decades of living on this planet and experiencing life with people each and every day of those more than sixty years, I can say that I get it. Some of us are wired to perform and give our best and some of us never learned that.
I know when I was in my 20’s people would talk about me being maternal and I didn’t really feel what they were saying. Yes, there were times when I could be very nurturing, giving and caring, but a lot of the time I was the exact opposite.
I feel that I learned to be nurturing and maternal from my Mom and my Dad. They’re both very caring individuals and can be very nurturing when that’s called for and they taught me that. I thought I was just doing what I was taught and living in accordance with how I was raised.
Now, I can certainly see that I do feel “maternal instincts” in many situations. Where I once was so annoyed with people who seemed to let me down, now I can have compassion for them that they may not have the talent or the capacity for what they’ve agreed to do.
I know there are many times, when it comes to the admin side of my life and work that it seems like I can do better. When I look into it, it seems as though that would really mean working more hours in a day and I already work the max hours I can work, so it’s not a viable possibility for me.
The option is for me to teach less and do more admin and that thought isn’t one I like.
Yes, some people are lazy. But many people are really maxed out. And many have never been trained to have an attention for detail. I honestly think that people would do better if it were possible for them to do so and so let them be if they’re not an integral part of your life.
I’m interested in finding the way to nurture and encourage those who are interested in doing well and giving their best.
It’s quite satisfying to support people in pouring their heart into their work.
We can be whole-hearted and enjoy each day and we can model that and inspire others!
