Years ago, someone posted on Facebook, “does anyone know a really good anti-inflammatory?”
Immediately I posted, “forgiveness. Especially self-forgiveness.”
It’s true – I’ve seen it work over and over again on chronic pain, arthritis and other physical issues in addition to other challenges: financial, creative, relationship, health, wealth and Self-Love. Of course, it has to be true forgiveness and not just pretty words.
For the healing to happen at the level of the mind we have to be more interested in being right-minded than in being right and holding a grievance.
I remember years ago, Sheila Wilson in our community had a miraculous healing of chronic pain. Sheila lives in Louisiana and they had a record flood. Her house was submerged in water and, in fact, her daughter almost drowned inside the house.
Because of the flooding, Sheila lost most everything in her house and she also had to close her business which she’d worked so hard to build. Everyone in her family was affected and many were displaced. It was devastating.
Of course, after the water receded the nightmare really began with having to throw away so many of their possessions because they weren’t salvageable. Just imagine if your house was filled with water. What would still be worth keeping?
And then there was the mold.
All the red tape with the government.
It was so much, and so many were devastated. All her neighbors, family and friends. ALL of them. People died.
Through it all, Sheila practiced forgiveness and used the tools from our Masterful Living classes. It was very challenging, but she relied on her spiritual practice, forgiveness, prayer and our community for support. She doubled down on forgiveness.
A few months later Sheila’s partner surprised her by sending her to my Forgiveness Retreat. Sheila arrived early and was helping me to set up the room at the retreat center. I needed a pen to fill out a form and didn’t have one, so I asked Sheila.
She started looking in her purse and, after a moment, she pulled out a bottle of Excedrin. She looked at me, surprised, and I asked, “what is it?”
Sheila said, “I’ve had chronic pain in my neck for more than three years. I never go anywhere without pain relief, because the pain is that bad. I even get up in the night to take more pain killers. And I just realized I haven’t taken any pain meds or had any pain in more than a month.”
I knew immediately that it was all the forgiveness she’d been practicing. Forgiveness is an anti-inflammatory. Inflammation is the cause of pain, aging and many illnesses.
I said, “honey, it’s the forgiveness.”
She knew that it was. She was amazed. Particularly because she’s also a nurse and she understands the body.
It was permanent pain relief.
A Course in Miracles tells us that forgiveness is the cure. ACIM tells us that our function is to be the Light of the world and if we hold grievances it blocks the Light of the world in us. It says, in Lesson 68, Love Holds No Grievances, that we won’t remember who we are if we don’t forgive.
Without forgiveness, we’re lost in time and space, in a world of illusions, delusions and misperceptions.
I’ve seen so many people heal so much by truly practicing and living ACIM. It’s demanding, that’s true, but it gets easier and it’s always worth it. I’ve never heard anyone say, “all that forgiveness I did never amounted anything, it was a waste of time.”
Instead, I’ve heard story after story after story of miraculous healing.
It’s not enough to just be able to read the words written in a spiritual book and say we understand the teaching. If we don’t live it and apply it we don’t really know it. For myself, once I really KNEW what the teachings meant then I had to live them to the very best of my ability.
I’m so grateful my ability improves with every day as I feel an ever increasing Peace of mind and the Joy of God within me. There were many times when it felt so hard to live these teachings, but it doesn’t anymore. It’s exciting to feel the Beauty of my true identity!
Living ACIM and practicing deeply while remember to laugh is what our Change Your Mind About Your Body Program is all about. It’s about breaking the habit of believing we’re a body, and believing that we’re not good enough to be loved. It’s about getting to the root cause of our suffering over our bodies.
Starts TOMORROW, Monday, May 29: If changing your mind about your body is of interest, check out our new program – Change Your Mind About Your Body using A Course in Miracles principles – this is a 5 month program with a long list of great ACIM teachers including Alan Cohen, Lisa Natoli, Gary Renard, Jon Mundy, Bill Free, Cindy Lora Renard, Corinne Zupko and more!
