Aversions

Monday, September 14th, 2020

I used to have an aversion to people who seemed weak, timid or afraid. It would bring up my own fear of being weak. I didn’t know that’s why I had the aversion, but that’s how this mirroring thing works.

What I also didn’t realize was that my many, MANY aversions were a huge distraction for me. Getting triggered, annoyed, upset, irritated and frustrated as well as taking offense on a daily basis ate up a lot of my time and energy. It also kept me swimming in a low vibrational pool of negativity of my own making.

I blamed everyone else, so I didn’t see a way out of it – until I was willing.

Do you have an aversion to people who act in a certain way?

I literally would feel this intense need to get away from people who were insecure. It was almost as if it were some kind of thing that I could catch – and that thought terrified me. Now, I’m aware that the reason it was so bothersome to me is that it was my own insecurities being reflected to me.

My insecurities were intolerable for me. I had so little self-compassion.

All of that began to change when I decided to focus on being compassionate for others.

As I was able to extend love to others, I could begin to have some love for myself. A little bit of love goes a long way.

This is why each act of loving kindness that we can extend to others opens our heart and helps us to be more available to the good in life. AND I learned that the way to heal an aversion is to have compassion. It works!

Life is SO much better without aversions.

Now, I use my time and energy for things that are enjoyable and productive. That makes my life worthwhile.

Now, I can see that my aversions kept me playing small, living in lack and limitation.

Next time your mind drifts to attacking someone, or even yourself, see if you can remember this and extend some compassion to welcome more good in your life. It’s a powerful spiritual practice that we can take with us every moment of every day!

Have you seen the direct results of having a practice of extending Love and compassion? Please tell us about it and share in the comments below! Thank you!

Aversion to Fear

Friday, September 4th, 2020

I used to have an aversion to people who were anxious and nervous and worried. I felt as though they could possibly transmit their fear to me and that I’d catch it – and I didn’t want it. I would have a strong visceral reaction when people were nervous and scared around me. I really couldn’t stand it.

It had nothing to do with them, and everything to do with me.

I had no compassion, wisdom or understanding for my own fears.

It was my own fears that scared me – and I was triggered by the very slightest hint of another’s fears.

Of course, anyone who’s paying attention can tell who is afraid and who isn’t. The bully seems tough, but deep down, they are FAR more terrified than the person who appears nervous. The person who seems angry and pushy is acting from deep seated fear.

Now, I can see that the feeling of aversion to other people’s worry and fear was that I already had plenty of my own and I didn’t want to take on anymore. To me, feeling afraid was a failure. Back then, I’d rather have experienced many difficulties than let anyone know I felt fear.

Now, I can feel the fear, and hand it over to the Higher Holy Spirit Self and move on.

I’m not afraid of fear anymore.

I feel so grateful that I can ever be of assistance to someone who is feeling afraid or worried. If you meet someone who is anxious, I encourage you to do what you can to support them. Sometimes it’s best to simply pray silently and send a smile.

I remember a decade ago when I was on a silent Vipassana retreat for 10 days, and one of the women in my bunk house (there were 11 of us) was in her late 20’s. We weren’t supposed to look at other people. We were to keep our gaze inward and focused on our own awareness, but it was difficult not to notice this young woman was crying a lot. She was really processing a lot of guilt and shame, or so it seemed to me.

At one point, I looked at her when she was crying, and seeming to be quite miserable with herself, and I simply winked. I winked to let her know, “this too shall pass.” It was a small gesture, but I meant it with a great deal of Love and support. At the end of the ten days of silent meditation, she told me that it had meant a lot to her.

Spirit guides us.
All the time.

We get nudges to say or do something and sometimes it seems out of character or out of step, but I’ve learned to do it anyway.

I’d rather listen to Spirit and be in tune with that voice than listen to the ego and be in lockstep with its endless demands.

What is the intuitive nudge that you’ve been getting that you’re not listening to? Will you be willing to follow your intuition today?

I’m getting ready for my Stop Playing Small Online Retreat in just 2 weeks. Trading Fear for Joy

Monday, August 10th, 2020

We frighten ourselves. We do. And we do it on purpose.

Some of us have trained ourselves to not rise above worry, anxiety, fear, sadness, or some other emotional state.

There can be many reasons for why we’re living this way.

To me, it doesn’t really matter why we’re being dysfunctional and living in fear or some other lower emotional state. I used to be fascinated with people’s psychological states and how they got there. I was so interested in people’s stories and tales of woe and how they had come to their conclusions that they weren’t good enough, or some other self-perception that was completely false.

Now, I can see that I was living from my intellect, always curious about other people’s patterns of “disinformation” about themselves so that I could be distracted from my own patterns. It’s not the case anymore.

Since Love is the healer, and only Love can heal whatever my issues are, analyzing how I got here isn’t helpful.

Only Love is helpful. I focus on how I can be loving to myself and others. It brings tremendous fruit! And fulfillment!

Are you analytical like me?
Do you feel safer living in your head than in your heart?

There’s a lot of us, and we can all be transformed by the Higher Holy Spirit Self. All we have to do is realize that our true heart’s desire is to live from the heart, ask the HHSS for support in living from the heart, and then follow the guidance until it feels easier and easier.

Before too long we will have changed our way of being in reaction and living in our intellect.

It brings such Joy and it puts an end to fear.

It’s so worth it. And our willingness is all that’s required.

Let’s be as willing as we can be to change our mind, be kind and remember to laugh. Our spiritual practice transforms the world!

Undoing Fear

Thursday, July 9th, 2020

I can remember when I would have shock waves of fear that seemed to shoot through me like lightning waves.  I’d have a thought that would produce a rush of adrenaline and an energetic shock that moved through me in a way that my heart would start racing instantly.  The worst was late at night or first thing in the morning.

Once I had a mild panic attack that was a whole different kind of fear but felt almost foundational – like my very core was threatened.

If only someone could have told me then what I now know!  And A Course in Miracles says it so well:

“All fear is ultimately reducible to the basic misperception that you have the ability to usurp the power of God.”  ACIM T-2.I.4.

I understand that it seems hard to believe that all fear comes from judging, and from thinking thoughts that are untrue.

It can seem as though fear comes from what’s happening in the world.  It can seem like there’s a monster out there that’s upsetting us, but all of the causes or fear are in our own mind.

Our opinions are what’s frightening us.

When we affirm our judgments and opinions we’re affirming that we’re the ones who decide who is good and who is bad, who is right and who is wrong, and in doing so we become the usurpers.  We’re usurping God.  We become guilty of spiritual patricide.  And that’s really scary.

We can train our mind to see beyond appearances and recognize only the truth, or we can continue to learn to live with fear and bend ourselves to it’s uncomfortable distortions of reality.  I move that we love ourselves enough to stop frightening ourselves and live in Peace.

Consider if there’s someone in your life that you really love and adore – would you yell at them?  Frighten them?  Torture them?  Manipulate them?

You wouldn’t do those things if you truly loved them.  Those behaviors have nothing to do with Love.  They are the distorted behaviors that fear brings.

Let’s undo the patterns of fear in our own mind so that we unwind the pattern in all minds!

What judgment do you have that could possibly be worth holding onto when you know that it will cause your own suffering?  Think of all the things you’ve done to try to end your suffering that haven’t really worked.

Would you try the one thing that actually works?

Or do you feel that you can have your judgments and the fear you experience is unrelated?

I don’t think I could have believed giving up my opinions would relieve me of fear.  I only know that it works because I have been giving up my judgments as part of my daily spiritual practice for more than a decade and as a result, I don’t have much fear.  Most of the fear I experience these days is annoyance.

I can’t remember the last time I felt one of those shock waves of fear, but I can remember feeling joyous and grateful yesterday.  I feel grateful and thankful even now as I write this.

I let God be God.  I am part of God, and I don’t need to judge anything or anyone anymore.  I’m not interested in being a usurper.  I prefer to feel free and harmonious ALL of the time.  I am intent on it.  I am closer to my goal every day!  And for this, I am so very grateful!  I am loving myself free of lack, attack and limitation.  It’s happening now!
